And Now For Some Words...

I may be jumping the gun a little bit on this, but I'm an overexcited mommy with too much time to online shop and so I'm gonna go ahead and toss these two ideas out there: Have any of you started thinking about first birthday parties, and also, halloween costume ideas???

I know Halloween is closer, but it's not my favorite holiday. I'm trying to change that by living vicariously through Ava, but seeing as how neither her or I can have candy - or at least the good stuff - this year, we'll see how that goes. I am, however, very excited to dress her cutie patooty up, and so I'm currently brainstorming cutest baby on the block ideas. Perhaps a bumblebee? What about a ladybug? How about something creative and original like...well, I'm fresh out of creativity today, but thankfully I have over two months. Can't wait!

Now for the big guns. First birthday parties. HUGE deal, at least to me. I know historically they were a big deal because back in the day, not everyone made it to their first birthday. And even so today, the first birthday marks the end of SIDS fears, which is a big enough reason for me to go all out. So I pose a few questions:

-Since most of our babies were born around Christmas time, when do you plan to do the party? Pre-holiday? Post? My mom and possibly stepdad want to fly in for the occasion and so they're hoping for a post-holiday party in order to have flights be more affordable - makes sense to me! As of right now, I'm thinking the weekend of Jan. 8-9, if only because New Year's kind of foils the previous weekend. Is that too long to wait?

-Themes. Oh, how I love a theme party. I don't want anything cheesy, though, and I am not the Disney/Looney Tunes/Snoopy/etc type. Those things just don't suit me and never have. Perhaps because, I kid you not, had I been a boy my mom wanted to name me Christopher Robin. Maybe that's why I've always been a friend to the gays? Anyhow, I literally had Winnie the Pooh shoved down my throat as s kid (OK not literally, but you know what I mean...), and so I'm kind of not into it.

Here are my theme ideas so far:

-Elmer the Patchwork Elephant. I saw this on a website for first birthday themes and LOVE it. It's colorful, it's an elephant (like A's room, A's things, etc!), and it's adorable. The only thing concerning me is if it'll be too hard to find plates/theme decorations? Have any of you ever seen anything like this???? Does anyone even know who this is besides me??

Um, well, that's about it. Yep, one idea. That I'm pretty set on because I like reaching decisions. The only things Ava has shown interest in besides her lovies and such is this pink stuffed talking Foofa doll, but if you think I'm having a Yo Gabba Gabba themed party, you're nuts!

Ideas?? Am I the only psycho mommy thinking about this stuff already??

  1. For her first Halloween, poor lil girl was sick on her costume. :( She was a white striped kitten. I had a pink kitten outfit, but lil girl outgrew it, haha!

Her grandma suggested a monkey, but I wondered why I ought to dress her up as something she already was, hah!

Most baby costumes are sort of cliche...bumblebees and pumpkins and such...if you're feeling really creative, why not make her a costume?

I envision tiny baby pirate, or baby beer wench-in-training...then again, I am a sucker for the Ren-Faire inspired stuff!

  2. Hmm, I don't know of that elephant, but he's so cute and I love the colors!!!! It's not too crazy to start thinking about the 1st birthday... and I will be going all out just like you. :) I love to plan parties, too, so it will be super fun once I start... after we get a little more settled into our new place! I'm not sure what I was thinking... maybe a baby cowboy theme :) Wait... maybe that should be for Halloween. Hehehe, so much fun!

  3. That's Elmer the Patchwork Elephant. It's a children's book. I did a quick google and a link to someone's blog who did their son's party came up!: http://thepurplepug.blogspot.com/2009/12/patchwork-elephant-pom-pom-garland.html

  4. Haha, you are not psycho! Or if you are, then so am I. Jack's birthday is the 23rd and I plan to do his party before the holidays. I am doing it at one of the local gyms, probably My Gym, but I want to check it out first. Since it'll be winter, we definitely have to do it indoors and my house is way too small. The gym seems like a good idea. The kids can run around and tire themselves out! I have been researching first bday cakes for awhile now, because I want to make something healthy. Jack will not be getting any sugar during his first year, and I don't want him to be overloaded on sugar after not having any for a full year. As for a theme, I have absolutely no idea!

I do know what I am buying him as a birthday gift, and I already bought his Christmas gifts!! I'd buy the birthday gift too if I thought I could hold out on giving it to him. I am super excited for his first Christmas and to start new traditions. Even though he won't remember, I plan on doing it all this year.

I've briefly thought about Halloween, but I think once the stores start putting out their stuff, I'll be much more inclined to plan his first Halloween. It just doesn't take as much prep work as the other 2. But I'm super excited for all that's to come and have already started planning for it all!!

  5. Oh, and that elephant is awesome!! I am a huge fan of color and love the idea of centering your party around him. I went to that website too- so cool!!! This makes me want to start thinking about themes and be more creative with it!

  6. I actually was just researching birthday ideas yesterday! I'm so excited for Asher's big day and want to make it really special for him (and us for making it!). So far I don't have anything specific, but I love bright colors too, so I'm thinking maybe circus? I definitely have to give it more thought.

I have known what we're doing for his 1st Halloween since before A was born. I always said that if I had a boy he will be Baby Superman, Drew will be Clark Kent, and I'll be Lois Lane. I love family costumes. :o) We'll see if it happens!

  7. Oh, and because I know you're interested...if I ever have the "right" kids to pull it off we're totally going to be the Wizard of Oz family.

    Asher is Scarecrow
    Baby boy #2 is Lion
    Baby girl is Dorothy
    Drew is Tin Man
I am Glenda (the good witch!)
    dog is Toto

    Now who's crazy? Hahaha :o)

  8. I love that you are thinking/planning this already! I have been thinking about it, but I feared if I told anyone they would think I was crazy. Elmer is awesome, so is the book!! The website suggested is fabulous - I'll have to take a peek at other posts on the page as well!
