Update.

First and foremost, thank you all so much for your kind words and thoughts and prayers for our family. They are so incredibly appreciated and mean so much to me.

My grandmother is doing much, MUCH better. I actually spoke to her this morning and she sounded great, with no lasting damage. One of my biggest fears when I got the call that she'd had a stroke and that she didn't know what was going on was (after fears for her life and for her well being) that she wouldn't remember me, or remember meeting Ava. I was so relieved to hear her sound like her normal self I could've burst into tears all over again.

D's grandfather, unfortunately, did not fare as well, and passed away this morning. While his passing is obviously terribly sad - he's Ava's first relative to have died since her birth - we are trying to look at the situation as positively as possible, given that he lived 100 years, 6 months, and 1 day. What a huge accomplishment, and what a wonderful, exciting, fulfilling life he lived. I cannot imagine what it must have been like to live through both World Wars, The Great Depression, Vietnam, the Gulf War, the revolution, the evolution of women's rights and desegregation of schools, and so on. What an amazing man. His funeral will be Friday morning, so D and I will head up to Waco with little A that day. Not to sound superficial in the wake of a tragedy, but what do you dress a baby in for a funeral? I am having a difficult time locating a black dress in size 6-9 months (or a size in either direction, either).

Again, thank you all for your prayers, thoughts, support and general warm fuzzies that were sent my way. They were so helpful :)

  1. So sorry about D's grandfather. Yes, it's amazing to think that he lived through all that history! I don't think I've ever known anyone who's lived to be 100 and a half!

    For the funeral, I would just dress Ava in a pretty "Sunday dress." I wouldn't worry at all about the color (but that's just me). I bet she'll put a smile on a lot of sad faces that day.

    Save travels!

  2. I'm so sorry. I know what a difficult time this can be as we just went throught it with Brandon's Nana. Ava will be such a blessing during this time. I just dressed p in a sundress that was covered in watermelons. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about D's Grandfather, but you're absolutely right, he lived a good long life!

    As for the funeral... most stores will carry baby items in black, just online and not actually in the store. Here's one from baby gap... we actually thought about getting Li one a while ago for family portraits so that we'd all be in the same color: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=25781&vid=1&pid=786111&scid=786111002 Hope that helps! Whatever she wears she'll brighten up everyone's day I'm sure.

  4. We went to a funeral last Saturday for a little 4 year old girl we knew who died of Neuroblastoma. Heartbreaking. Riley wore a simple outfit in darker colors (mostly brown). I don't think it really matters overmuch what they wear cause they're babies and all. So sorry for your loss, but I'm really happy he had such a long, fruitful and blessed life. {{{hugs}}}

  5. I am so sorry for your loss. How wonderful that Ava got to meet her great-grandfather. I agree with everyone else, that it doesn't matter what she wears. She will surely brigthen the room no matter what!

    I am so glad to hear your grandmother is doing so well!
