Please Tell Me..

...that I'm not the only sucker whose baby sleeps in their room still??

I swore I wouldn't do it, but I did. Ava has slept in her super deluxe bassinet next to our bed since day one. I'd love to say it was my first and/or last sucker moment as a mommy so far, but that would be a flat out lie. In my defense, she doesn't ever sleep in our bed, so that's something, right? Right?!?!

Does anyone else still have a teeny-tiny roommate? If you have older kids that once slept in your room, how did you break the habit? Should I expect a big fight?

  1. Um, I sort of doubt you're alone...I had some friends whose babies slept in their room till 6 months old.

In my case, Marianne moved to her own room down the hall at 2 weeks old. In that 2 weeks, I got zero sleep. My PPA wouldn't let me sleep at all, for all that she slept a good 3-4 hours a stretch from the day we brought her home. She and her Daddy would literally be snoring away, and I'd be lying awake.

She seemed to sleep better in her own room...mostly due to the fact it was quieter...her Daddy snores, and I do too, and I think sometimes that might have woken her up.

Now of course, 8 months later, she sleeps best in her crib...when she naps, she naps there, and she sleeps through the night. I think it's made for good sleeping habits, honestly, because she's used to sleeping by herself in her own bed in a quiet, safe little room with her loveys...

What's really hilarious is that now when I put her down for a nap, if she's sleepy but too wired to settle down for a nap, I'll put her in her crib with a board book...then I'll tell her to have a good nap and leave.

After a few minutes, I will hear her enthusiastically telling the story (baby talk, of course) to her loveys in the crib while turning pages...it's SO CUTE. Eventually she'll get tired and go to sleep, and I'll creep in later to find her hugging giraffe, cuddled up on her quilt with the book in the other hand.

  2. I have a friend whose son slept in her room until he reached 11 months. At that point, it was a tad insane. You are FAR from that stage. You'll move her when you and she are good and ready.

  4. :) My daughter slept in our room until she was about 6 months old...I worried about it a lot, too...but my mom kept telling me not to...that I would "just know" when we both were ready for her to move. (I hate that "just know" phrase because it is so subjective...haha.) But, she was right...my husband and I kinda "just knew" when the time was right and it wasn't a fight at all. I will admit...she slept better than I did at first...I think I was up all night a few nights at first worried about her, but she did just great. So...as much as I personally hate to hear this...don't worry and just do what's right for you when it's right for you...you'll know. :) And, enjoy this stage...sometimes I miss my teeny tiny roommate. :)

  5. Jack's crib is in my room so even though he's not right next to me, he is in the same room. But for the first 2 months, he slept in bed with me! I knew I had to stop this before going back to work so I started putting him in his crib when I first put him down. He'd sleep 4 hours and then I'd bring him back to bed to feed him and he stayed there the rest of the night. Once he started to sleep longer, 6+ hours, I would only bring him to bed for the last part of the night, from about 4:30-7:30am. This is where we're at right now. The transition has been a lot easier than I thought and we're both sleeping better. Small steps! :)
